Georges d’Espagnat, a “cageless Fauve”, placed emphasis first and foremost on the harmony of colours in an attempt to depict nature in a warm and vivid manner. He produced many still lifes of fruit and flowers in bold, richly coloured compositions using a thick, energetic facture. The painting in question is a perfect example.
