About this work
This painting was inspired by Paul Sérusier’s Quatre Bretonnes dans la forêt. But here Lacombe lays emphasis on the ruggedness of the faces, a trait that contrasts with the trunks of trees in the forest, play of the branches in the forest, which discreetly curve between the heads of the three young countrywomen.
The thick black outlines around the flat blocks of colour was a primary characteristic of the painting of Pont-Aven, which Lacombe avidly studied. The effect, sought after by the artist, of the mat surface of the tempera painting brings out the depth of the colours: the reds, browns and blacks.
